Environment and sustainability
We aspire to be a leader among UK companies in the field of corporate responsibility.
Implementing sustainable development thinking, procedures and policy with suppliers is one of the key elements of our construction strategy. This involves:
- ensuring compliance with environmental regulations as a minimum standard for performance
- applying the concept of sustainable development to the planning, design, operation and decommissioning of facilities and services
- developing management systems and empowering employees to ensure that environmental factors are included in all decision making
- leading the drive with staff and suppliers to achieve environmental improvement through the effective communication of policies and standards
- engaging in constructive dialogue with local communities and others affected by the environmental performance of the business
- challenging overall environmental performance through benchmarking, targeting and auditing
- providing support and advice on environmental matters to those directly involved in our project delivery
Managing environmental impact
We are addressing the three key areas of energy consumption, waste management and recycling in all aspects of our major projects. To reduce current levels of energy consumption on site, we have developed operational standards and energy targets for the designers of airport buildings and systems. In the construction process, we work with suppliers to minimise waste generated by construction activity. Methods of waste segregation are also under investigation reduce landfill, and already 95% of concrete from airport aprons and runways is recycled within new developments.
Please see our corporate responsibility site for full details of all our work in this area.
