Health and safety policy
Setting safety standards within the construction industry involves working with a wide range of suppliers. We set high standards for safety both on site for the interface between airport and construction activity. A safety strategy has been developed in order to deliver continually improving performance. This includes:
- alignment of safety policy and approach with expert suppliers
- appointment of competent suppliers and workforce
- target setting
- measurement, monitoring and review procedures
- leadership and facilitation
- supplier accountability
Safety campaign
In 2000 we introduced our One in a Million campaign. The original focus of the campaign - aimed at reducing reportable injuries - has been developed into one of safety excellence. A range of safety management tools and techniques to support this campaign have been made available through collaborative working with suppliers.
Current initiatives include:
- the introduction of a behavioural safety programme for both management and workforce
- improving the health of the workforce through an occupational health programme
- recognition of the importance of construction supervisors through a focused training programme
- an 'employ, equip, enhance, engage' model to attract, develop and retain a safe and effective workforce
