Stansted Skills Airport Skills and Employment Academy
Launched in February 2008, in partnership with Urban Futures, the Academy was launched to provide a base for all elements of recruitment, training and skills support at Stansted Airport. By having a physical presence at the airport, the academy also provides a gateway for employers to access this support and for individuals to take advantage of employment opportunities.
Airport Skills Training Programme
The Airport Skills Training Programme is an important part of Stansted Airport's community-led approach. The programme, run in conjunction with Harlow College, provides training for the long-term unemployed and guarantees students that complete the course an interview with one of over 50 on-airport employers signed up to the scheme. Those successful in getting a job with an airport employer receive a free travelcard for their first year of employment. The programme was hailed by Gordon Brown, when Chancellor, as ‘best practice’ in his 2007 Budget Statement.
An easier ride to work and back
Through the BAA Communities Trust we pledged £50,000 over three years to local charity Rainer’s ‘Z Bikes’ programme which loans mopeds to young people who are struggling to secure a vocational opportunity due to transport problems. The Trust also pledged £20,000 over two years to SCooTS, a similar intiative operating in Hertfordshire.
