Reports reap rewards for Friends of ANCHOR

The airport’s Health & Safety Team were on hand recently to present a cheque to the airport’s partner charity Friends of ANCHOR thanks to input from staff across the airport.

During 2014, over 400 safety observations were reported by those working onsite, with £1 being donated for every one received. The initiative is part of the airport’s wider safety management system which encourages staff to take responsibility for everyone’s safety using its iconic clown campaign ‘safety is no laughing matter’ to spread the message.

The observations can range from a potential trip hazard, right through to a patch of ice on the ground which could be a slip hazard, with each and every report investigated by the health and safety team.

The donation forms part of the airport’s efforts to raise money for the chosen charity across 2015, with a number of planned events and fundraising initiatives in the pipeline. In December last year, both staff and passengers raised over £235 by donating via a wishing tree in the terminal building, and leaving messages for loved ones and staff at the charity’s hospital wards. Aldrich Blignaut, Head of Health & Safety at the airport said ‘I am delighted to be able to present this cheque for such a worthy cause. Safety is of utmost importance to us at the airport and this was just one initiative to encourage every staff member to be responsible for safety. The reporting of safety observations is key in allowing us to maintain a safe environment for passengers and staff and the fact that we can raise money for charity is an added bonus’.
