Aberdeen Runway Run Raises more than £70,000 for Charities

Aberdeen Runway Run Raises more than £70,000 for Charities

Aberdeen International Airport and CHC Helicopter have successfully hosted the seventh annual Midnight Runway Run, with this year’s event raising an impressive £71,000 for charity.

Held at midnight on Saturday, 20 June 2026, the longest day of the year, the unique 4km run once again saw 400 participants given the opportunity take to the illuminated runway for an unforgettable experience.

Now firmly established as one of the North East’s most distinctive fundraising events, the Runway Run continues to grow in both scale and impact.

The funds raised will support Aberdeen International Airport’s charity partner, SAMH, and CHC Helicopter’s chosen charity, Lifestars, alongside a wide range of additional causes selected by participants through the GiveWheel platform.

Runners were able to direct 30% of their fundraising to a charity of their own choice, with more than 80 additional charities supported this year.

This year’s total surpasses last year’s £65,000 and brings the event’s cumulative fundraising total to more than £320,000 since its inception.

Robert Paterson, Operations Director at Aberdeen International Airport, said: “This year’s Runway Run has once again exceeded expectations, both in terms of participation and fundraising. Raising £70,000 is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the generosity and enthusiasm of everyone involved.

“Hosting the event on the longest day of the year made it even more special, with a brilliant atmosphere from start to finish. We’re incredibly proud to work with CHC Helicopter, our headline sponsor Bilfinger, and all our partners to deliver such a unique event that makes a real difference to charities across the region.”

Ryan Broadhurst, CHC Helicopter Captain and event founder, added: “It’s amazing to see how much the Runway Run has grown over the past seven events. Every year the support from the community gets stronger, and this year’s total of £70,000 is our biggest yet.

“Seeing our runners out on the runway at midnight was special. A huge thank you to everyone who took part, fundraised, and helped make the night such a success.”

The 2026 event also marked a milestone with Bilfinger joining as headline sponsor for the first time, supporting the continued development of the event and helping enhance the overall experience for participants.

Hazel McIlwraith, Director of Fundraising and Major Appeal at SAMH, said: "We’d like to thank every single runner who stayed up late to take part in this year’s Runway Run and helped make it such a fantastic success. Raising £70,000 is an incredible achievement and will make a real difference to people across the North East.

“These vital funds will support life-changing mental health services in local communities, including The Nook – our free walk-in mental health hub that opened in Aberdeen’s Marischal Square last week.”

Willie McPherson, Chief Fundraising Officer for Lifestars, said: "We are incredibly proud to have been part of this year’s Runway Run and grateful to be one of the charities to benefit from such an inspiring event. A heartfelt thank you to Aberdeen International Airport, CHC Helicopter and everyone who took part for their continued support.

“The funds raised will play a crucial role in helping us grow our work and support more children and families who rely on Lifestars. Seeing the event continue to grow year on year, and knowing the difference it makes, is truly special.”

Participants of all abilities took part in the midnight run, with times recorded using chip technology, and many embracing the challenge of staying up to run on one of the most unique courses in the UK.

The event was made possible thanks to the support of headline sponsor Bilfinger, alongside partners ACE, Stagecoach, NATS, Ross Promo, AV1, GJ Services, ICTS, Ferrier Pumps and Dewhurst Airfield Services.

With another successful year complete, organisers are already looking ahead to 2027 as the Runway Run continues to build on its reputation as one of the region’s most anticipated fundraising events.
